Greenwich
My trip to Greenwich was awesome. Greenwich is in London near the river Thames and it was the first place were time was measured. It is famous for its 0 degrees longitude. There are museums which explain the history of the prime meridian.
Its name?
The name Greenwich Meridian is derived from the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Meridian means midday.
How many lines are there?
There are 3 meridian lines. The main meridian line was founded by Sir George Biddell Airy. The other 2 Meridian lines were made by James Bradley and Edmond Halley. Confused?😐😕Well the picture above is Airy's meridian line. His line is the main meridian. Halley's and Bradley's meridian line are marked in the inside of the museum.
Fun facts!
-At 1pm everyday a large red sphere falls to tell sailors the time if they have to fix their watches.
-On the line there are degrees that show what latitude each country is.
-The meridian divides the earth into North, South, East and West.
-When the sun is at its highest point, it is exactly 12pm at Greenwich🌞
-King Henry the 8th was born in Greenwich👑
-Shakespeare may have rehearsed his plays in Greenwich👸
-Some of the trees there date back to the 1600s 🌲
-The Greenwich meridian goes through UK, France, Spain and lots more🌍
-Greenwich park is the oldest known Royal park
